Alert Bay
For many thousands of years the Kwakwaka’wakw, or “People Of the River”, lived here on Cormorant Island, living a peaceful existence that worked in harmony with the local resources and food sources. In 1792 a seafaring captain by the name of Vancouver found the shores of the island and thus began the colonization of the area. Many consider Alert Bay to be the oldest active community on the north end of Vancouver Island, and today it is a magical place to visit and take in the sights and sounds.
