Jasper Park: Medicine Lake
Medicine Lake is a little lake located approximately 20 kilometers outside the city of Jasper, Alberta. In all reality, it's not a true lake, but rather a run-off area for the Maligne River, which feeds into the Maligne Lake. During the winter and spring, this lake is typically 60 feet higher than late in the summer, when these photos were taken. During the course of the summer when the Maligne River slows it's flow, Medicine Lake slowly drains back into the earth's crust via fissures located at the bottom of the lake.
When this lake was discovered by the local natives, they referred to it as "Magic Lake" or "Medicine Lake" because of the way the lake drained in the summer. The fissures responsible for the drainage were discovered years later.
